The world of music paid homage to the late Sir George Martin on Wednesday, with Midge Ure remembering a man who was “a cross between your favourite schoolteacher and a father”. On ITV’s Good Morning Britain, the Ultravox singer and producer recalled: “He was one of the most wonderful people I’d ever met.”
The broadcaster Bob Harris said: “George Martin was our finest ever producer. He was a gentleman, kind, caring, articulate and incredibly creative. Without him the landscape of British music would be very different.”
Singer-songwriter Gary Barlow, speaking on Chris Evans’s Radio 2 breakfast show, said: “We’re all still copying his work. He was pioneering music every day he went into the studio.”
Gary Kemp of Spandau Ballet tweeted: “George Martin was the Edmund Hillary of music – adventurer, explorer, discovering routes for pop music we have all gratefully trod behind in”, adding:
